8 more laptop music producers battle it out for the title of Laptop Battle champion!
Producers get paired up at random at the start of the night and are entered into head-to-head bouts.

Label manager, Simon1manarmy has spent the last year designing and launching a new Foundation Degree in Creative Audio Technology for Bournemouth University, while holding down a full-time lecturing post.

Yeah, so 1 Man Army Records has been pretty quiet this past year.

This has to change!

1 Man Army Records will be releasing some all new material in the summer of 2009 and linking up again with the Laptop Battle UK crew to put on some new shows in Autumn 2009. Time to get the show back on the road!

Hi my name is Alex and Im from Austin Tx, USA.
I stumbled upon a video featuring Headphobe in a laptop battle on
youtube. Then i checked out your website, 1 man army records and I was blown
away.

Right now its streaming Defazed - Trip to Bihjan and this shit is
ridiculously amazing.
I just wanted to say that your record label is a great inspiration and
it makes me dream of a better life.
I have attached a track which I had to do for my final project in my
Remixing class at my community college.
It's not even in the same league as that of the gifted producers'
tracks on this label but it is my most complete electronic effort up
to this point in my life.
Listening to 1 man army records makes me want to devote the rest of my

The collective efforts of everyone in your crew is a beautiful thing

Great night!!! The battle was sick!

The standard seems to get better and better everytime.
Massive respect to all the producers in Laptop Battle 5!!! Everyone was really really good. It must have been a bitch to judge.

Congratulations to Defazed! Again, a worthy champion.
I think many people were surprised to hear him playing his new dubstep styles for most of his battle sets.
While everyone seemed to be going full-throttle with their breakcore, jungle, mashup styles, Defazed slowed it down and nailed the dubstep/breakstep sound. His dubstep remix of Prodigy's 'Break and Enter' was especially good and his excellent control and manipulation of audio gave him the edge against defending champion The Fez in the first round.

The Sherif was good fun with his crazy MIDI guitar (which was a first for Laptop Battle). A real showman! I thought his stage presence and showmanship was somewhat undermined by his basic production values and cheesy compositions. A top bloke though and he definitely added value to the night. Autyren started strong but his music seemed to lose momentum towards the end of his sets. Quality beats, intricately programmed, but his rather meek stage presence and limited manipulation of audio perhaps gifted the win to The Sherif. This was Autyren's first ever live set so big respect to Tom (hopefully we will get to hear more of his tunes in 2008 - one to watch out for).

Battle 3 saw Spaghetti Machete from Plummet take on Gyu from Dissident. I thought Gyu's sets were some of the best all night with some wickedly produced breakbeat tracks and he was unlucky not to progress to the next round. I think that again, the crowd response for Spaghetti Machete and his visceral attitude and sound gave him the edge over Gyu (who seemed to be lacking his usual support in the crowd). Maybe the Dissident posse were over the road at the Renegade Hardware night?

General Disarray played a blinder! Massive sound, killer beats and clever manipulation of audio. He was up against it in the first round when he got drawn with the legendary Parasite (who I honestly thought would end up winning the event). This was one of the best battles on the night and neither of them deserved to go out. Maybe the more positive crowd response that General Disarray received gave him the edge in the judge's eyes? Who can tell? Parasite put in a much more solid display than in Laptop Battle 3 and his classic ragga/jungle/breakcore tracks were spot on for the night but I'm sure the veteran Parasite won't begrudge the rookie General Disarray the win.

Defazed wiped the floor with The Sherif in the semi-final. General Disarray played another blinder in the semi-final against Spaghetti Machete. This set-up the exciting prospect of a final between Defazed from 1 Man Army against General Disarray from Blunderphonics.

The final was one of the best battles I have heard in any of the Laptop Battle UK events so far. Both producers were technically sound and some stunning productions were unleashed. Defazed gained the advantage in the judge's eyes with his superior live manipulation of sound with some clever control over effects and filters combined with his tight keyboard drumming and triggering of sounds. Again, he went for his new dubstep/breaks style but this time at a faster tempo and with more intensity. General Disarray hit back with breakneck beats and a tidy display of knob-twiddling. General Disarray proved (in this being just his 2nd ever live set) that he is certainly one of the most promising up-and-coming producers in Bristol and was a worthy opponent to Defazed. The crowd were deafening as they cheered for both producers but Defazed received the crucial extra dB of support in the packed out battle arena of The Croft.

The judges made up their minds and as they one-by-one held up their voting cards General Disarray took the lead with the first decision, followed by a decision in favour of Defazed, leaving a split decision from the judges which intensified the suspense, before the final decision went Defazed's way to crown him the new Laptop Battle champion.

Again, massive respect and thanks to all the producers involved in the battle, they were all stars!
This type of event really puts the producers under the spot light and places greater emphasis on manipulating as much of their music as possible rather than adopting the 'press play' attitude that seems to be too prevalent at many so-called 'live' electronic music nights. It takes more than throwing a few shapes behind the laptop to impress the judges at Laptop Battle.

After the battle we had the 4 times UK DMC DJ champions The Disablists who performed an exemplary display of musicianship and technical turntablism combined with a heightened sense of musicality that is often missing in more typical 'scratch' DJ sets. It was great to have them involved in the night, highlighting the influence that the DMC DJ battles have had on the development of the Laptop Battle scene.

Slick sets from the DJs in the front bar and the typically entertaining banter from Gusto Fresh MC during the battle made this a really enjoyable night. Thanks to everyone involved!

Loz Koleszko releases his follow-up EP 'The More I Sleep' in July 2007 on 1 Man Army Records. 'The More I Sleep' was written in early 2003 just before the launch night of 1 Man Army Records and the debut live show from Loz Koleszko, and has finally been released from the vaults and made available as a free download from this website.

This ambient EP marks a temporary shift in style from previous releases on 1 Man Army Records and should be listened to from start to finish in one sitting. Beautifully cinematic, this EP takes influence from Minimalist composers such as Michael Nyman and Brian Eno, while maintaining Koleszko's own inimitable style.

As the so called summer continues to rain on us, GlitchNight is back in July to provide you with some sunshine at a brand new venue and some top quality music.

Andromede is collaboration between two electronic artists: Lastra Pink and Q Squared from 1 Man Army Records. They produce and perform progressive electronic music for the dance-floor, combining elements from various musical genres, both electronic and acoustic. Influences include Jungle, Electronica, Pink Floyd, Gipsy Music, Break-Beat and Electro resulting in a unique musical journey enhanced by live visual projections. Their performance consists of various audio-visual manipulations with laptops, controllers, effects and sometimes collaborations with musicians and singers. Andromede began producing in Bristol (UK) 2006, performing at various local nights such as Plummet, Boggle, Ruffneck Diskotek and Glitchnight. They went on to perform for wider audiences at Legends in Manchester, Rock Paper Scissor in Berlin and Hasenland and also Berlin. In 2007, Andromede relocated to Venezuela to concentrate on their live act and record an EP. They perform monthly at Electro night Rhapsody in the suburbs of Caracas.

After the massive success of Laptop Battle 3 another 8 laptop music warriors will take to the stage at The Croft on Saturday 23rd June for Laptop Battle 4.

The format of the event will revert back from the team battles of LB3 to single battles at LB4.

Representing 1 Man Army Records is ANORAK and IDIRON SOUNDTRACK who will be up against the likes of EBOLA, AVIAN-FLUX, ATKi2, RUDE_NHS, THE FEZ, and FLAPSANDWICH.

DJs for the night include ASIAN HAWK (DMC UK DJ champion), IRONSIDE, ASSASSiN, STAR DELTA, and TOBY D. The MC for the night will be the inimitable GUSTO FRESH MC.

Doors are open from 9pm until 4am, with the battle taking place between 10pm and 1am.
Tickets are £5/£6 on the door.

Laptop Battle 3 was a complete sell-out, so come down early to avoid a 1-in-1-out queue.

LAPTOP BATTLE UK v3

March was brought to a spectacular conclusion with the 1st ever UK LAPTOP TEAM BATTLE event in Bristol, which featured several artists from 1 MAN ARMY RECORDS, including HEADPHOBE & DEFAZED, ANORAK & THCHRIS, ELECTROBUNNY, MICHAEL J ROCKS, and newcomers to the label THE ACOUSMATIZER.

This was the best LAPTOP BATTLE UK event yet, with a full house, great atmosphere, and a barrage of amazing new electronic music. The battle was fiercly fought, eventually culminating in a final between 1 Man Army's HEADPHOBE & DEFAZED up against Dissident's MADTEK. Madtek put up a formidable fight with a wikkid set of new skool breaks and badass basslines, but HEADPHOBE & DEFAZED proved to be too strong on the night with some incredible sets incorporating the impecable production qualities of DEFAZED and the wizardry of HEADPHOBE's live keyboard drumming. The judges voted unanimously in favour of HEADPHOBE & DEFAZED who were also the crowd's favourite team, and the title of 1st ever UK LAPTOP TEAM BATTLE CHAMPIONS went to HEADPHOBE & DEFAZED. It will take something special to beat this team.

Big respect to all of the producers, DJs, MCs, VJs, and promoters for putting on such a great night of innovative live electronic music.

Last night we witnessed the 1st ever UK LAPTOP TEAM BATTLE event. The club was packed and the stage was set...

The final battle was immense with the crowd right behind both teams, but the mighty HEADPHOBE & DEFAZED proved to be too good for the competition and prevailed with a unanimous decision from the 3 judges to be crowned the 1st ever LAPTOP TEAM BATTLE CHAMPIONS!! Long live the kings!

This was the best LAPTOP BATTLE UK event yet and thanks go out to all of the producers, DJs, VJs, MCs, and organisers for putting on a wikkid night of amazing music. And a massive thank you to all of the people who came along to the night to cheer on their favourites and to have a laugh and a dance. Respect!

"Yey hey! Out in the first round by a unanimous judges decision!

Congratulations to Headphobe and Defazed (Ned and Rich) for a deserved win, they trounced everyone in every round, there was no doubting they were going to walk away with it.

By extreme ill fortune we were drawn against them in the first round, which we had been dreading. They really hammer hard with their live drum triggering rather than loop based play. We thought we might be able to compete with them in one of the longer later rounds, as Parasite thought they were struggling to keep it up that long when he saw the last battle. In the two-minute opening round it's very very hard to prove yourself and we had no chance against them.

Michael J Rocks was cruelly knocked out. He was the only person who played two two-minute tunes with a beginning a middle and an end (like they teach you at school). Everyone else just kept making noise until they were told to stop. It leave the crowd wanting more but it's not quite as satisfying as a whole.

I think we could have gone further with a different draw but that's life. Was still great fun and the night in all was great. All the neigh-sayers who think its just a geek fest really should see it; there was a brilliant vibe, the crowd were well up for it (there was almost a mosh pit at times) and no beardstroking in sight. Well done to everyone involved and thanks to the promoters for putting it on.

At least I squeezed in a DJ set early in the night so I did play for more than four minutes, and I got to have a little jam with DJ Asian Hawk (UK DMC champion and 2nd in the world, apparently), which was fun.

I've learnt a lot about software and performance though doing this and my normal live sets will improve for it too. It's been a valuable learning opportunity. For the technically minded the advice I received is mostly in this Mu thread. The exception was an email string with Steve Milanese who adviced me not to try to learn software (when I mentioned Pd) in a short space of time, "practise drumming shit a lot and not worry too much about using mad software." It worked for Ned and Rich, as they were much tighter than I've ever seen them before last night. The practice pays off. Well done guys."

Laptop Battle v2 at the Croft was again a banging exhibition of electronic goods. As always a big thanks to all competitors, VJ's, MC and helpers. Also bigup to the BBC for the TV news coverage.

Quick whitted MC Gusto Fresh's banter accompanied interludes from scratching genius Asian Hawk(UK DMC DJ champion) as the two hosted the battle action out in the back room. Back to back VJ battling was supplied by Pixel Monkeys & Meek TV amidst the performance - nice one...

ROUND 1

Linear Systems vs Shoutput

Shinra vs Polestar

After a beat intensive battle between the first pair, Shinra and Polstar introduced a more laid back approach. Polestar showing of progressive trance like sounds couldn't beat down the jumpy breakbeats and samples form Shinra.

Company Fuck vs Spaghetti Machete

Company Fuck thrashed out a chowder of noise which made most of our company say what the fuck! Spaghetti Machette provided an upbeat set that led to a convincing victory.

Pseudoscience vs Headphobe

The luck of the draw saw two of the favorites go head to head in the first round. Pseudoscience was coming back with vengence after his defeat in the semis last time, but couldn't swing the crowd and judges his way. This was a technically impressive round.

Shoutput vs Shinra

Spaghetti Machete vs Headphobe

Valient 2nd round performances from Shoutput and Spagetti Machete were not quite enough to take down the crowd pleaser Shinra and the reigning champion Headphobe.

With Headphobe being in the lime light due to his high profile BBC coverage, the pressure was on for him to retain the crown. A quality first laydown from Headphobe left Shinra to respond and with another production of good quality breaks leaving the crowd seemingly split down the middle. Shinras ability to repeatedly pull out the groovable beats from the bag meant Headphobes crown was lost...Long live the king!

KUANTUM_WINDOW was a series of live electronic music events at The Arc Bar, The Cube Microplex, Cosies, and The Cooler in Bristol between 2004 and 2005.

These events focussed on showcasing the entire roster of artists on 1 Man Army Records and placed a strong emphasis on the visual accompaniment to the live electronic music.

KUANTUM_WINDOW was founded by Simon Clayden (Flooglebinder), Ned Clarke (Headphobe), and Phil Collier in close association with 1 Man Army Records.

"The first event, June 22nd 2006 at the Croft was absolutely wicked and big thanks to all competitors, VJ's, MC and helpers alike. The response was amazing and showed that the format is truly a success and needs to be followed up.

Well this was a first for us and as far as we know a first for Bristol (and the UK)... The Croft acted as the perfect venue, a good close arena with the availability of escape if and when needed to fill up on the beer front. It was always going to be a truly experimental event treading new boundaries for a night out and the results were wicked. What appealed to us in the first place was the ability to have a night of experimental electronic music that would be both in your face and asking a few questions but also live. Interaction was the name of the game with crowd participation/reaction at the forefront of the judges minds, getting people involved in their night out, away from the simple spectators view of the norm.

With both live visuals and live performance on show the crowd were treated to a feast for the senses that demanded participation leaving nobody behind.

The producers stepped up to the challenge with an array of technical ability, musical prowess and the odd costume laying down there fight straight to the audience. It really does have to be seen in the flesh to appreciate what was happening and truly was a first time experience for producers and crowd alike.

ROUND 1

Loz Koleszko vs Pseudoscience

The first face-off saw Pseudoscience and Loz Koleszko lay down the gauntlet for a night of the unknown. Loz Kolesko had to begin and set up the night with fierce beats and unrelenting synths that was answered by Pseudoscience likewise. Pseudoscience ended victorious with octopus like dexterity tweaking more dials than you can shake a glowstick at.

Madtek vs Defazed

So the Battle had started and the next contenders at least had the advantage of seeing what the feck was going on and responded likewise. Next up were the Madtek boyz and Defazed which proved to be a true contest as two took on one. The MadTekboyz set in with the first breakbeats of the evening using well known samples as a backdrop and giving true momentum from the stage. This was answered from Defazed with a slow musical build up to an all engulfing sound. A slight learning curve from the MC on the timings went against Madtek but there is no mercy in battle and Defazed was triumphant.

Binray vs Headphobe

Next up Headphobe took to the stage with a mixture of biting film samples and a beat delivered from the keyboard with obvious live abandon. This was answered by Binray (sporting the headgear with an onslaught of noise showing there is no limit to the number of beats that can be fitted into two minutes. Headphobe proved victorious as his stage presence and accessible sounds lead the way.

Ebola vs Shoutput

The fourth round saw Shoutput take to the stage with fat jungletek sounds that brought a firing rythem to the night as the terrier showed his teeth. The answer from Ebola saw the undisputed visual victor decked out in boxing gloves, cod peice and monitor spell out the true meaning of Battle. A little unluckily dogged by extended technical difficulties, Ebola began with the theme from Rocky and played out with some extremely tight production. Shoutput took the victory as the judges patience was tested by Ebola leaving him rightfully to have to fight another day.

SEMI-FINAL

Headphobe vs Shoutput

The second round saw the bass take on the beats and proved too much for Shoutput. Headphobe's stage presence and easily visible technique took the crowd by storm leading him to victory over a worthy adversary.

Defazed vs Pseudoscience

This bout proved to be the Battle of the big sounds as rolling synths and build up came into play. The sound was massive and the fight was hard but Defazed came out on top as his compositions proved too good setting up for an almighty final.

THE FINAL

Defazed vs Headphobe

So the final was here and two sets of five minute bouts gave the producers time to build and break to an awesome deathmatch. Defazed showed his merits as a composer building the sound for some heavy drops with extensive production and musicality bearing its head. Headphobes answer was again to take to the stage as a true performer getting the whole crowd in awe as he mashed up the keyboard producing cutting beats and searing sounds. Defazed's musicality ended in second place with no shame as the live manipulation from Headpobe proved too much. Crowned as Champion of Battle I Headphobe played the night out in true crowd pleasing fashion leaving everyone asking what would be in store for Battle II......

Massive respect to both of the finalists and all who took part as the boundaries of music were stretched to there limits giving a true spectacle for the crowd and judges alike." Jason Paine

LAPTOP BATTLE UK is a new style of music event, featuring 8 producers, 3 judges, 2 VJs, and an MC. The focus is on showcasing new experimental music, not rivalry.

The producers are paired up at random and entered into an elimination style laptop music battle. The producers are given 3 minutes slots to influence to crowd and the judges with their chosen sounds. The winner of each round will move up through the table to eventuate as Laptop Battle champion!

The idea behind the event is to push the envelope of live manipulation of self-composed electronic music. Therefore the "judges will be looking for originality, composition, improvisation, live manipulation and performance". Technical craftsmanship needs to be partnered with the ability to generate a positive crowd response.

Jim the Slovak steps into electronic artist Loz Koleszko’s twisted little world.

Sitting in the graveyard emptiness of the Rat and Parrot in Bath, Loz Koleszko slumps back into his seat and muses on one of his favourite subjects. ‘Well, I’m quite fond of being knifed. Have you ever been stabbed before?’, he purrs with an air of quiet enthusiasm. ‘It was becoming something of a problem actually but I’ve sought help. It’s a 12-step thing. Knife wounds anonymous. How about yourself? You look like more of a drowning kind of guy to me.’ This could be interesting.

Koleszko has come a long way, beginning his musical career in the Derby andNottingham region, emerging first as a key member of Derby based band Reserpine Blue. Constant gigging resulted in growing support, eventually culminating in talks with Indie label Fortuna Pop. The band hopes were dashed however, when the deal failed to materialise and tensions within the band increased. Eventually they split and Koleszko disappeared, ending nearly all communication with his close friends.

Very little is known of Koleszko’s movements through that period until his emergence in Bristol two years ago. He supposedly worked the graveyard shift as a cleaner at a local Accident and Emergency department ‘cleaning up blood and vomit’ according to Reserpine Blue keyboard player Tom Ainsley. This perhaps contributed to his slightly worrying obsession with hospitals and medical paraphernalia. At some point in 2000, Koleszko is said to have had a substantial stint in hospital himself due to a long-standing stomach complaint. There was, however much speculation that the causes of his hospitalisation were down to the state of his mental rather than physical health.
Koleszko materialised again in September 2001 to undertake a Music Technology degree in Bristol with a vow never to let anyone listen to his music again.

By March 2002, he had been signed to new local label 1 Man Army Records and had a debut EP release on the cards. Fact 1: Loz Koleszko often contradicts himself.
That debut release has emerged as ‘The Monkeys Danced Like Cuboids’ an EP full of colourful rhythmic journeys and a floating yet uneasy ambience. The beauty of his sonic orchestrations is ripped apart by his twisted beat programming, satisfying even the most insatiable beat-junkie. The EP takes you through a host of emotions sounding melancholic yet optimistic, lifting you up from the progressively building beat of ‘Piblokto’, hammering you back down with beats and digital noise and then relieving you with the grand musical sigh that is the sampled porn and piano end track ‘The T Stands For The’.

Koleszko now speaks fondly of ‘Monkeys’ and for the first time in his career seems content with the way his work and life is heading. Sipping on his pint, he considers the role of label 1 Man Army Records. ‘Promoting good music, that’s all. There’s a lot of shit around masquerading as art, but it means nothing. It has no point. You get nothing from it and you have to give nothing to listen to it. Music, especially electronic music, seems to have lost its sense of humour. It isn’t fun to listen to anymore, it has no personality. Hopefully 1 Man Army will put that back into music.’

Speaking to Koleszko, I get the feeling that this may be possible yet when I inform him of my enjoyment at the EP launch night back in February, he simply grins. I ask him to describe his live set in no more than ten words, he accepts the challenge. ‘Like Geri Halliwell on crack... and mushrooms... pregnant with bees.’
Recent live shows have seen a fan-base slowly grow, with a local buzz now revolving around ‘Epoch’, 1 Man Army Record’s live night. The Koleszko live experience violates brooding atmospherics, digital distortions and angular post-techno with a childlike twisted humour. As complex beats destroy his cartoonish melodies, preachers wax lyrical about Satanists and children swear and curse. Crowds are inexplicably drawn into his dirty little psyche. After insisting a young female who has just entered the room obviously finds me irresistible, the conversation turns to what influences him in his production. ‘Falling down stairs, Public Enemy and pianos.’ he replies stroking his chin in his typical goading way. As with everything he does it’s hard to tell whether he is serious or simply having a massive joke at our expense.

His current musical tastes are explained in the same tongue-in-cheek fashion, ‘Right now the CD’s at the top of the pile are Flooglebinder, The Moog Cookbook Plays The Classic Rock Hits, the Zongamin album, Justified by Justin Timberlake and The Golden Age of the Grotesque by Marilyn Manson’. No matter how ludicrous this list sounds, you can’t help but believe him and find it strangely intriguing.

‘I’ll tell who is amazing,’ he interrupts my next question, ‘Tori Amos. She is fantastic. Her songs are beautiful, she is beautiful. There’s nothing bad I could say about her. Live, she just loses it, she’s in her own little world and nothing else seems to exist to her at that moment. She’s great. I should probably stop talking about her now because otherwise we may be here for a very long time.’

So what’s next for ‘the new face of electronica’? ‘Well, I can’t really do much until I finish my degree. I’m living in Bath at the moment but hopefully I’ll get to London after uni. Then it’ll be lots of gigging... and schmoozing... and world domination. It’s the only place to go if you really want to get anywhere in music. I’ve got some big plans.’
It is here that he perks up, getting quite animated when explaining how his new material is going, a sly grin spreads across his face. ‘I’ve done an album of ambient stuff which is almost finished. Hopefully it will be released soon; it just needs mixing and a finalised track list. I’m also working on a cover of ‘Killer’ by Seal, which I would like to do something with, if he’s happy about it anyway. As for a follow up to the EP (Monkeys), I’ve probably got a couple of albums worth of material together since, but it’s all over the place... in terms of sound anyway. I’m just waiting for a common denominator to emerge and thread it all together.’

Koleszko’s next line of proposed work comes as less of a surprise, ‘I’d also like to do the soundtrack to a porn film, so if there are any porn peddlers reading this get in touch. You know it makes sense.’

At this point Koleszko begins to look uneasy and looks over at the bar before slowly edging off his seat. ‘Before you leave could you sell yourself to the readers in eight words?’ I ask. He thinks for a second before he replies ‘Loz Koleszko for sale. Unwanted gift, ten pounds.’ With that he swaggers off, no thanks, no goodbye, nothing, that’s it, I guess this interview is over. Koleszko is a fresh personality on the electronica scene, a mood swing antisocial, who has a sense of humour and is, despite popular opinion, willing to talk to anyone and everyone. But only on his own terms, always on his own terms.

1 MAN ARMY RECORDS is an independent record label in Bristol and Bath in the UK, representing a new underground network of electronic music artists.

1 MAN ARMY RECORDS is a catalyst for this new breed of experimental artists, producing hybrid forms of underground dance music and live electronica.

LABEL HISTORY

1 Man Army Records was founded in Bristol in 2001 by Simon1manarmy and THChris and was officially launched at EPOCH on Friday 7th February 2003.

EPOCH was a trilogy of live electronic music events in 2003 that introduced a new generation of cutting-edge electronic music artists and showcased the debut live performances from new electronic music artists including Loz Koleszko, Chemical Dub Theory, Headphobe vs Defazed, and Flooglebinder.

In 2004 Kuantum_Window was launched by Headphobe and Flooglebinder in association with 1 Man Army Records. This was a new series of electronic music nights in Bristol held throughout 2004 and 2005 at venues such as The Arc Bar, The Cube Microplex, Cosies and The Cooler. These events focussed on showcasing the entire roster of artists on 1 Man Army Records and placed a strong emphasis on VJs and the visual accompaniment to the live electronic music.

Plummet was launched in 2004 by Shoutput, Spaghetti Machete, and Michael J Rocks. Plummet focuses on the darker, harder styles of live electronic music and regularly features artists from 1 Man Army Records. These nights were originally held at the Thekla and the Black Swan in Bristol before becoming a monthly night at Timbuk2 in 2006 and 2007.

In June 2006 the 1st ever Laptop Battle UK event was held at The Croft in Bristol, featuring several artists from 1 Man Army Records. The 1st ever Laptop Battle UK champion was Headphobe, who also won the team battles with Defazed at Laptop Battle 3. Laptop Battle has become a regular event in Bristol, has branched out to London, and plans are being made to setup regional battles with a Laptop Battle UK National Final to be held in 2008.

Andromede

Andromede is a collaboration between two electronic artists: Lastrapink and Q Squared.

They produce and perform progressive electronic music for the dance-floor, combining elements from various musical genres, both electronic and acoustic. Influences include Jungle, Electronica, Pink Floyd, Gipsy Music, Break-Beat and Electro resulting in a unique musical journey enhanced by live visual projections. Their performances consist of various audio-visual manipulations with laptops, controllers, effects and sometimes collaboration with musicians and singers.

Andromede began producing in Bristol (UK) 2006, performing at various local nights such as Plummet, Boggle, Ruffnek Diskotek and Glitch Night. They went on to perform for wider audiences at legends in Manchester, Rock Paper Scissor in Berlin and Hasenland also in Berlin.

In 2007, Andromede relocated to Venezuela to concentrate on their live act and record an EP. They perform monthly at Electro night Rhapsody in the suburbs of Caracas.

Blam is one of Bristol's best kept secrets.

Defazed

"Producing twisted music since 2001. I spent my mid-late teens playing guitar in various thrash/death metal bands in Plymouth. It was a pretty dull scene that I rapidly became bored of. At the same time I was experimenting with recordings of my guitar and sequencing beats on my computer.

I left Plymouth in 2001 and came to bristol to study a degree in Creative Music Technology at university. My musical preference rapidly shifted to electronica and jungle, and I spent a lot of time listening to a lot of new music. I tried my hand at several types of electronic dance music, but none of them really did it for me and I some how ended up writing whatever it is I write now.

In 2003 I played my first live show with Headphobe, and we have been playing together (mostly) since that night. I don't like to be pigeon-holed or forced into a sub genre.

I like producing dark, emotional, deep, and intense music. If you're interested, take a listen!"

Defazed released his debut 12" vinyl 'Cortex Run' on 1 Man Army Records to critical acclaim in 2004.

Electrobunny

Nick Sutton began his musical life in the classical scene as an instrumentalist and composer. After writing works for several groups, eventually recieving an award from the ICA for a composition for the Contemporary Arts Ensemble, his attention turned to electronic music.

Since 2003 he has been experimenting with live laptop mixing and performance, alternating spun out improvisation with solid dirty stomping tunes, playing for Hijacker, Weekender, Aqueous and Notes Alive.

In 2004 he released his first EP 'Lodge' through Studio 6 Records under the name Little Rabbit, and 2006 saw his joining the Audio Aubergine Net-Label with his newly formed LRAB art collective.

In 2005 he became associated with 1 Man Army Records and performed his music at Kuantum_Window and Plummet events as Electrobunny.

His invitation to appear at the Philadelphia 'Electro-Music' Festival resulted in his self release of the Electrobunny 'Aythax Game' E.P.

In 2007 he released his 'Lotus' EP on 1 Man Army Records under the name LRAB.

Flooglebinder

Simon Clayden produces electronic music, which parodies life as a producer in a world where music has become a type of throwaway culture.

Flooglebinder gives quick access to his music by pursuing elegant melodies with hyper-edited beats and elastic visuals. He comments on how his music must have a degree of recollection, and shadow previous works with a similar gravitational pull towards emotion.

Flooglebinder develops his music alongside highly expressive visuals, which are created using the latest 3d technology.

Fracas

Fra·cas [ fráyk?ss, frák?ss ] (plural fra·cas)

Definitions: A noisy, disorderly fight or quarrel; a brawl.
Early 18th century: French, "crash, roar". Italian fracassare "cause an uproar".

Fracas tries to stand aside from any generic style of music. Technically, you could call it electronica, but really it's an eclectic exercise and battle between many different influences and genres, hence the name.

"I've been doing music since I can remember. Playing drums and piano was never enough so I turned to computers. Having studied music tech at school/college I tried to go to uni but found it a bit shit. Nowerdays I sit around on various computers generating music and artwork.

I love dance music (not house) and most things electronic. My influences are endless. My music is a representation of everyday life as I see it. Quite often I am accused of being paranoid and a worryer so my music follows a similar track. I try not to emphasise concepts too much in my music. Track names are usually just off the cuff (whatever the finished track makes me feel like).

I have done about 60 gigs in and around Bristol and they were mostly great. There has been a great reponse to mine and Defazed's music for which I am very thankful/proud.

Iddikk

South-west UK based solo artist Carlo Degregorio (a.k.a. Iddikk) creates his own fusion of mashed machines to explore the complex networks of biochemical oscillations and ripples in the mind.

The music often projects fast menacing rhythmic sequences that interact with discharges of psychedelic melodies and sonic landscapes; the music communicates a futuristic lifestyle.

Iddikk performs his music using cutting edge live sequencing and audio manipulating software, while some of his work includes remixing and collaborations with Fracas and Electrobunny, and also in live performances with Fracas.

Iddikk is the youngest producer associated with 1 Man Army Records and has produced and performed some next level music at Glitch Night, Alternative Blueprint, Kuantum_Window and The Molotov Cocktail Party in Bristol, Bath, and Bridgwater.

Pseudoscience has been rinsing peoples minds with his 100% LIVE Reaktor sets.
Systematic amplitude and frequency modulations.

Pseudoscience is the music of evolving machines and their conflict with humanity.
It suggests our inevitable fate of developing organic machines which will blur the boundaries between creator/created and distort ideas about who or what is in control.

Pseudoscience attacks certain views about humans being able to live in a prosthetic environment where human and computer technology live in symbiosis.

The human frailty in the music is broken apart at the edges by machines which yearn to spiral into chaos, but which also try to mimic what they destroy.

The Acousmatizer

What can be said for The Acousmatizer? An eclectic mashup of most forms of electronic music, dance or otherwise, from the last 60 years. Think musique concrete with hard, fast breakcore rhythms and acid techno melodies. Think hip hop with industrial beats and psy-trance leads. Think music mother would not approve of. Starting the project with extreme speed and dedication, The Acousmatizer have wasted no time in their one-off production after a chance meeting at a uni lecture led to full time programming and manipulation of everything they can get their hands on. "Word! I'm Jack Fletcher, a musician from Bristol. I am involed in several bands and projects at the moment, the main one being Michael J Rocks, a breakcore collaboration with my good friend Luke Smith. This however is my solo project TWO.SECONDS.PER.SONAR. This alias embodies my more instrumental, experimental and generally less breakcorey electronica stuff (though I can't help shoving a few gabba kicks and amens in there from time to time!).
